Oldham Athletic had the early opportunity via a Bobby Grant header that went just over the Southend goal.

Emile Acquah had a shot that went just over after doing well to bring the ball down and get the shot away.

15 minutes on the clock and it was the visitors that looked the stronger side but unfortunatly the Shrimpers just could not penetrate the Oldham Athletic goal.

Hackett-Fairchild showed great footwork to allow him to get into a crossing position down the right but the cross avoided both the oncoming Dieng and Acquah with 18 minutes on the clock.

A Simeon Akinola cross into the box found the head of Emile Acquah who saw his headed effort totally avoid the Oldham Athletic goal and sail over.

With 25 on the clock it was the home side that now looked the stronger as they started to gradually creep into the game.

Southend had a big chance on the 35th minute from a free-kick but unfortunatly they couldnt capitalise as the Oldham keeper made a fantastic save to keep his team level. Reeco Hackett Fairchild had an effort bounce off the crossbar on the half volley just a moment later.

Half-time and neither side could find a way to break the deadlock but it was the Shrimpers with the better of the opportunities

Neither side made any changes during the break.

Southend once again hit the bar just after the restart when a Hackett-Fairchild cross found the head of Acquah whose effort hit the underside of the bar.

Ashley Nathaniel-George made his way into the game with 56 minutes gone in a straight swap for Emile Acquah. Simeon Akinola moved into the middle of the park with Hackett-Fairchild on the right and Nathaniel-George on the left following the substitution.

An hour gone and it was still level with both sides now canceling one another out in the midfield limiting the chances on goal.

20 minutes left on the clock and Southend made another substitution with Greg Halford coming on for Kyle Taylor and Elvis Bwomono entering the field of play for Shaun Hobson.

Hackett-Fairchild won the ball back on the right side before playing Nathaniel-George on who’s low weak as a kitten shot went straight to the Oldham goalkeeper.

Simeon Akinola left the field of play in a swap for Jason Demetriou on the 77th minute.

Five minutes left of the match and it was clear that Mark Molesley was now playing for the point which would not be enough to see the Shrimpers escape out of the relegation spots as Barrow were leading 2-0 at home to Mansfield.

Bobby Grant had a header on goal for Oldham with two minutes left but the effort went straight into the arms of Montgomery.

Southend failed to take the chances they were gifted and it cost them a vital three, unfortunately.
