Josh McPake had a superb chance to score for Harrogate early in the first half when he broke away down the right-hand side and produced a save from Mark Oxley at the near post.

with 25 minutes gone McPake was once again in on the action when the winger muscled his way through the Shrimpers defense to be denied once again by Mark Oxley between the sticks for Southend.

Shortly after the break, Southend striker Simeon Akinola had a one on one with the town goalkeeper following a mistake by Warren Burrell by the striker was not quick enough to stop James Belshaw from coming out of his goal to smother the ball.

Harrogate’s Brendan Kiernan hit the bar after some great work by Muldoon and just minutes later it was the Essex-based side that took the lead through a combination of Alan McCormack and Ashley Nathaniel-George.

McCormack’s strike was cleared off the line straight into the path of the on-coming Nathaniel George who buried the ball home from 10 yards out.

The final chance of the game came for Muldoon but it was all he could do to drag a shot wide from 12 yards out in the dying minutes.
