Carlisle United opened the scoring with almost 20 minutes on the clock after Zanzala charged straight through the middle of the park like a hot knife through butter and fired a low shot past Mark Oxley into the bottom left-hand corner from 20 yards out.

With 35 minutes on the clock, Alan McCormack had to leave the field of play due to a suspected calf injury and was replaced by Kyle Taylor.

Moments later and Simeon Akinola scuffed the chance to equalise from the penalty spot with what can only be described as a woeful effort.

Woeful, pathetic, passionless, if it were a sick animal it would be put down

No changes made at half-time

In the early stages of the second half, it was all Carlisle United who had 2 very good chances to score whilst keeping the Shrimpers firmly at bay.

With 57 minutes on the clock, Southend introduced Ricky Holmes to the action with Emile Acquah making way.

Southend thought they had equalised from a Tom Clifford free-kick which met Simeon Akinola but unfortunately, Akinola was caught offside.

Brandon Goodshiip, Elvis Bwomono, and Shaun Mellis made their way into the match on the 73rd minute in a swap for Akinola, Ferguson, and Jason Demetriou.

Carlisle extended their lead on the 80th minute via a curled effort from 20 yards out into the right corner of Mark Oxley’s net from Toure.

Southend’s players showed very little motivation or willingness to fight to stay in the Football League this afternoon at Roots Hall and I just cannot see it getting any better anytime soon.
