Mediocre Southend Take Home A Point In Hunt For EFL Survival

The National League is calling out for the Shrimpers even more so after a 1-1 draw away at Morecambe this evening.

The National League is calling out for the Shrimpers even more so after a 1-1 draw away at Morecambe this evening.

Southend manager Mark Molesley opted to start the game without a recognised striker on the field instead opting to use Timothee Dieng and Greg Halford and to be fair it paid off for the Essex-based side when they took the lead with 18 minutes on the clock.

A right-wing cross from Elvis Bwomono avoided the Morecambe defenders and found the head of Timothee Dieng to head the ball home past Morecambe goalkeeper Kyle Letheren.

For the remainder of the first half, neither side could find a way through and the Shrimpers looked happy to sit back and soak the pressure up.

In the second half, it was Morecambe who looked the much stronger side and they drew level 11 minutes into the second half when a volley from Cole Stockton beat Mark Oxley from 25 yards.

Southend looked all at sea during the second half and were lucky to leave with a point as the hosts chased the winner with Aaron Wildig going close with an effort that went over the bar.

The Essex-based club held out for a point which would have been a good point away from home at any other time but with the Shrimpers chasing survival in the EFL it is far from ideal.
