Phil Brown made three changes to the side that drew with Crawley Town last weekend at Roots Hall, Louise Walsh came into the starting 11 and both Simeon Akinola and John White made returns from injury.
Sam Hart took his starting place for Tom Clifford, Tom Clifford unfortunately took a knock in the warm-up according to BBC Essex.
Terrell Egbri took the place of Hart on the bench following the injury to Clifford.
Southend started this one on the front foot and attacked from the off which made a big change compared to the football played under Molesley.
The first half came to an end with Southend looking good with players running off the ball into space which was a big difference from the previous regime. Very positive first half for Southend.
No changes for the Shrimpers at Half-Time
Nathan Ferguson went ever so close right at the start of the second half but saw his headed effort go wide of the goal and away for a goal kick from a Sam Hart free-kick.
Jason Demetriou went close with a well-taken effort which was parried away by the Exeter goalkeeper.
Southend with a third chance in five minutes went close once again when a Simeon Akinola header from a Reeco Hackett-Fairchild cross was parried over by the Exeter shot-stopper.
An hour gone and still the Shrimpers looked the stronger and hungrier side who were doing everything at their disposal to get the goal but as has been the story all season it was goals that were evading them.
With 60 minutes on the clock, Exeter started to pile the pressure on the visiting Shrimpers.
Brandon Goodship made his way into the game for Simeon Akinola with 72 minutes on the clock.
James Olayinka came into the game with just shy of 15 minutes left for Ricky Holmes who went off holding the base of his back.
Bowman went close for Exeter on the 78th minute but his well-struck shot sailed wide of Mark Oxley in the Southend goal.
Alan McCormack replaced Louis Walsh on the 88th minute.
Mark Oxley pulled off a fantastic save from an Atangana effort which somehow was saved by the Shrimpers goalkeeper.
Hackett-Fairchild went down with what looked to be a groin strain right into the dying embers of the game.
and that was all she wrote.
Southend leave Exeter with a point but they need all three from games if they wish to stay in the football league. a big Essex derby awaits Southend this Tuesday as they prepare to visit fellow relegation-threatened Colchester United.
