Southend United’s 101-year stay in the Football League came to an end this afternoon as results went against them elsewhere even though the League 2 strugglers picked up a 1-2 win on the road away at Barrow AFC.
With the Essex-based side relying on either Colchester or Scunthorpe to not pick up a point the Shrimpers needed a win to keep their faint hopes of staying up alive. Unfortunately it was not to be.
Barrow opened the scoring with less than 20 minutes on the clock via a Scott Quigley goal but just 10 minutes later the Shrimpers drew level thanks to a John White goal and less than 10 minutes into the second half Terrell Egbri scored the second goal for Phil Brown’s side.
For the remainder of the game, both sides had chances but neither was able to convert those chances into goals and 1-2 was how it finished.
With Southend having done what they needed to do all eyes went onto Colchester and Scunthorpe but a 1-0 win for the U’s and a 0-0 for the Iron was enough to send the Shrimpers down out of the Football League and into the National League for the first time in the club’s history.
