The Shrimpers played their final game in the EFL this afternoon as they played host to play-off searching Newport County at Roots Hall.
With relegation confirmed last Saturday, the Essex-based side were playing for pride and for the shirt.
Shaun Hobson opened the scoring for Southend 11 minutes into the first half and just 10 minutes after the restart the away side drew level through Mickey Demetriou’s headed effort.
five minutes later and Southend were awarded a penalty from a suspect handball by Liam Shepard which Matt Rush was unfortunate not to convert but for a good save by Newports Tom King.
And that was all she wrote for the Football League history of Southend United Football Club who will be plying their trade in the National League for the first time ever next season.
