Match Report: Wrexham (A)

FREEZING conditions could not stop Wrexham against Southend going ahead this afternoon at the Racecourse Ground and it was the home side who took all three points in a tepid encounter.

Following a somewhat lacklustre opening 37 minutes it was Wrexham who opened the scoring following a suspected push on goalkeeper Steve Arnold by Wrexham striker Paul Mullin resulting in the ball in the net as the Southend fans protested that it should have been called as a foul.

Southend had the opportunity to equalise just minutes later but Dan Mooney wasn’t able to get onto the ball and the chance went begging.

Half-Time: Wrexham 1 Southend United 0

Southend enjoyed more of the ball in the second half but could not trouble the Wrexham goalkeeper or the referee who neglected to give the Shrimpers multiple free-kicks throughout this fixture.

Wes Fonguck and Rhys Murphy came into the action with 65 minutes on the clock with Dan Mooney and Chris Wreh making way.

The second half ended much as it had started with Southend enjoying more of the possession but having very little to no luck in front of the goal.

The fact that Kevin Maher has been unable to add to his squad since September is really playing a key factor now in the final stage of the season as the Shrimpers are now 3 National League games without a point.

Next up it’s Boreham Wood away on Tuesday night

Southend XI – Arnold, Scott-Morriss, Ralph (C), Hobson, Kensdale, Bridge, Husin, Mooney, Miley, Wreh, Cardwell

Subs – Lomas, Murphy, Powell, Taylor, Fonguck
